Understanding why delegating is easy, but outsourcing critical judgment is dangerous.
The Cognitive Principle: Effort & Energy
The human brain’s primary objective is to conserve **mental energy**. This drive makes us prone to treating the complex act of *outsourcing judgment* like the simple act of *delegating a task*. This shortcut (**System 1** thinking) leads directly to **overreliance** and degraded performance, especially in high-stakes decisions like executive hiring or investment.

Giving the AI a clearly defined, measurable, and repeatable process to execute. The output requires minimal interpretation.

Why It Works:
The task’s criteria are simple, predictable, and the human’s primary role is just to check the output for formatting or basic accuracy, requiring minimal System 2 engagement.

System 1 attempts to treat this as a simple task to conserve energy, accepting the AI’s strong anchor without activating the required **System 2** critical analysis. This is the moment superior human intuition is degraded.
The Solution: Cognitive Forcing Functions (CFFs)
Since the brain’s default is to conserve energy and reduce the **High Effort** required for judgment review, we must use CFFs to **force** the activation of **System 2**. The **Update CFF** (committing to an answer before seeing the AI’s judgment) works by creating necessary **cognitive dissonance**, compelling the human to expend the required energy to resolve the conflict and preserve judgment quality.
